Pistachio Orchard Planting: What You Need to Know

Pistachios are one of the most profitable tree nut crops in California. This guide walks you through the supplies, layout, irrigation planning, and labor requirements for establishing a new pistachio orchard.

Why Pistachios on the West Coast?

California accounts for 99% of U.S. pistachio production, concentrated in the San Joaquin Valley and parts of the Sacramento Valley. Pistachio trees thrive in hot, dry summers and cool winters with 600 to 1,000 chill hours. They are remarkably drought-tolerant once established and have an extremely long productive life—often 40 to 50+ years per planting.

Orchard Layout & Spacing

Standard pistachio spacing is 17 to 20 feet between trees and 20 to 22 feet between rows, yielding about 100 to 130 trees per acre. Female trees are planted in blocks with male pollinators interspersed at a ratio of approximately 1 male per 8 females, typically placed in every other row. Precise GPS-guided layout ensures optimal spacing for mechanical harvesting and uniform canopy development.

Essential Supplies

  • Tree sleeves or trunk guards — critical for protecting young pistachio trees from sunburn, rodent damage, and herbicide drift. Required for the first 3 to 4 years until bark hardens.
  • Support stakes and T-posts — pistachio trees are grafted onto rootstock (typically UCB-1 or PG1) and need staking for the first 2 to 3 years to prevent wind breakage at the graft union.
  • Drip irrigation system — micro-sprinklers are common for pistachios. Mature trees require 38 to 46 inches of applied water annually. System components include mainline pipe, lateral tubing, micro-sprinkler heads, pressure regulators, and filtration.
  • Tree ties and wire — for securing trees to stakes. Use materials that will not girdle the trunk as it grows.

Planting Timeline & Labor

Pistachio trees are planted as bare-root stock in January through March during full dormancy. The graft union should sit 4 to 6 inches above the finished grade. Experienced planting crews are essential—improper planting depth is the leading cause of early tree mortality in pistachio orchards. First harvest typically occurs in year 5 to 7, with full production reached by year 10 to 12.
