Site Preparation & Layout
Before a single vine goes in the ground, proper site preparation is critical. Start with soil analysis to determine pH levels, drainage characteristics, and nutrient content. Most wine grape and table grape varieties thrive in well-drained soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0. Your site should receive full sun exposure for a minimum of 6 to 8 hours daily.
Row orientation matters: north-south rows maximize sun exposure on both sides of the canopy. Standard row spacing for commercial vineyards ranges from 8 to 12 feet between rows, with 4 to 8 feet between vines depending on the variety and training system chosen.
Trellising Supplies You Will Need
- End posts — 8-foot pressure-treated wood or steel end posts anchored at each row end. Typical density: 2 per row.
- T-posts — 6 to 7-foot steel T-posts placed every 18 to 24 feet along each row. For a 100-acre vineyard with 8-foot row spacing, expect to need approximately 15,000 to 20,000 T-posts.
- High-tensile wire — 12.5 gauge galvanized wire for cordon and catch wires. Most trellis systems require 3 to 5 wires per row.
- Vine cages or grow tubes — protect young vines from wind, pests, and herbicide drift during their first 1 to 2 years.
- Anchors, clips, tensioners — essential hardware to complete the trellising system.
Irrigation Requirements
Drip irrigation is the standard for California vineyards, delivering water directly to the root zone while conserving 30 to 50 percent more water than overhead systems. You will need mainline tubing, drip tape or individual emitters (typically 0.5 to 1.0 GPH), connectors, pressure regulators, and filtration systems. Plan for one emitter per vine with the capacity to deliver 2 to 5 gallons per vine per week during peak season.
Labor & Planting Timeline
Vineyard planting in California is typically done from January through April, when dormant vines transplant best. Professional planting crews can plant 2,000 to 5,000 vines per day depending on conditions and mechanization. For a 100-acre vineyard, budgeting for 3 to 4 weeks of planting labor is typical. Experienced crews ensure proper depth (the graft union should sit 4 to 6 inches above the soil line), alignment, and spacing—critical factors that affect the vineyard for its 25 to 30-year lifespan.
